Atlanta United re-sign Rocco Rios Novo on loan to ease goalkeeping crisis – XenBet

Atlanta United have re-signed goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo on loan from Argentine Primera Division side Lanus until December 2022.

The Five Stripes are in desperate need of depth between the posts after Brad Guzan joined fellow goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira on the season-ending injury list, both with ruptured Achilles tendons.

Midfielder Ozzy Alonso was also placed on the season-ending injury list with an ACL tear of his own. As a result, Atlanta United will receive ‘roster relief’ in the form of an open roster slot to sign replacements on the premise that Alonso, Guzan, and Castanheira cannot play for the club again in any competition this season.

Winter arrival Bobby Shuttleworth stepped in for their 2-1 defeat to Inter Miami at the weekend but was Gonzalo Pineda’s only remaining senior option.

Rios Novo – a 24-time international for Argentina across various youth levels – is already well familiar with Atlanta United after spending the 2021 campaign on loan with their USL team and playing for the first team in Concacaf Champions League play. The 19-year-old put in an eye-catching display during the Five Stripes’ round of 16 game against Costa Rican side Alajuelense.

“We’re pleased to welcome Rocco back to Atlanta and look forward to integrating him into the team,” Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club press release. “He’s a young, talented player who we’re very familiar with who will add competition to our goalkeeping group.”

Atlanta United currently sit fourth in the Eastern Conference ahead of their trip to CF Montreal this weekend.
