Manchester United considering move for Sam Johnstone – XenBet

Manchester United are showing an interest in England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as they prepare to let Dean Henderson leave the club this summer, 90min understands.

Johnstone, like Henderson, is a product of the Old Trafford academy and will be out of contract with his current club West Bromwich Albion at the end of this season.

The 28-year-old has been with the Baggies since 2018. He won the first of three England caps in 2021 and was part of the Euro 2020 squad which made the final last summer.

Johnstone is now faced with a big decision, as he looks set to depart The Hawthorns. A number of clubs are keen on landing him including the likes of West Ham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Scottish champions Rangers.

However, 90min has learned that a possible move back to United could be an option – but that would mean serving as number two to David de Gea.

Henderson, the current deputy at Old Trafford, has made it clear that he wants to leave and the club are ready to sanction his departure, with Newcastle very keen to add him to their squad after failing to sign him in January.

Should Henderson leave the club as expected, United would then need more goalkeeping cover. They already have veterans Lee Grant and Tom Heaton in their ranks, but they would want a high calibre number two – which is where the interest in Johnstone comes from.

In the long term, United remain committed to De Gea and sources have revealed that the Red Devils are planning to open contract talks with the 31-year-old as a reward for his outstanding form this season.
